Highland Bagpiper

My Story

Where it all began.

I have been playing the bagpipes for over 30 years and started when I was 9 years old. My first band was the Woolston Royal British Legion Pipe band based in Warrington, this is where I first learnt to play. After a short while, the band joined up with another local band, the Warrington Pipe Band. I stayed with this band until I joined the army at 17 years old. After basic training, I was sent to the Pipes and Drums of the 1st Bn The Black Watch in Pirbright, it was in the Army that I began to further develop my skills and abilities as a piper. During my time as an Army piper I passed the class 1 pipers course which is a pre requisit for being put forward for the prestigous army Pipe Majors course.

Pipe Bands

After Leaving the Army, I returned to the Warrington Pipe Band and very soon after this was appointed Pipe Major. I played with my boyhood band for a further 9 years or so and decided it was time for a fresh challenge. In 2007 I was appointed Pipe Major of the Chorley Pipe Band and held this post for around four years after which I stood down and took up the Pipe Sergeant position in order to concentrate on my new business. During my time with Chorley I also became involoved with the Army and Air Cadets to teach the bagpipes, I am still involved as an instructer with the Air Cadets today.

Competitions

I have always been involved with competition bands across most of the grades either as a band member, tutor or band leader, I have played at most of the official major championships, including the World pipe band championships, the European championships and the British championships. I have also previously been the North West England solo piping champion. My experience gained in these events allows me to provide a professional service to any event type. Having experienced this high level of performance, I am able to offer a professional service from the standard of turn out to quality of playing for your event.

Military Associations

I am always keen to be involved with various veteran groups and military associations. Over the years I have been honoured to play for the Burma Star Association, The Royal Marines Associaiton, The Royal Air Force National Service Association, D Day Revisited, The Royal Scots Dragoon Guards Association, The Scots Guards Association, The 4th Bn The Parachute Regiment and also the Aden Veterans Association of which I am their honourary piper. Due to my military background, I feel it is highly important to support these groups and others like them whenever I can.

Tutoring

I am always happy to pass on my knowledge I have gained over the years. I'm not as involved in the competition scene as I once was, I gain much more satisfaction now from helping band members improve their skills. I have developed my own tutoring programme over the years, some of my students have gone on to enjoy varied experiences both in civilian and military pipe bands.

High profile events

Whilst serving with the Black Watch I was lucky enough to travel all over the world with them. Over the years I have taken part in many high profile events, the highlights of those events would be the playing for the Royal family and various other heads of state at official functions, the Edinburgh military tattoo, North American tour and the hand over of Hong Kong.
Some of the hgh profile events I have taken part in include:-
